Christopher Williams performs his homage to Marino Zuccheri and the work of the Studio di Fonologia (Milan) in radiophonic compositions created for this event – using audio technologies ad techniques from the 1950s to the 2000s: modular analogue synthesis; musique concrète, filtering; signal processing; ‘tape’ looping; step sequencing; and voice; all in glorious quadraphonic sound.

Luciano Berio and Marino Zuccheri

Marino Zuccheri (1923-2005) was principal sound engineer at the Studio di Fonologia from its beginning in 1955 to its closure in 1983. He was responsible for the technical realization of many significant works of electronic art music including works by composers Luciano Berio, Bruno Maderna, Luigi Nono, and John Cage. Zuccheri has only recently been acknowledged following curatorial research for the installation of elements of the Studio di Fonologia della RAI within the Castello Sforzesco, Milan. Zuccheri transformed the technology of the classical electronic studio into creative tools. He was also a notable visual artist and composer in his own right.
